lelandmax ::: Favorites my son was hit by a car while riding his unicycle, and the insurance co. of the driver was trying to say that my son was in the wrong because he had no brakes. ALSO, skidding is NOT EVER the best way to stop anything. bike, motorcycle, car, etc. I have a front brake on my fixie. 07-10-04 00:03:41 __________________________________________________
2point0mail ::: Favorites A unicycle has a direct drive and NO brakes... Wonder what the take would be on that?? 07-09-30 21:55:06 __________________________________________________
collectivescott2 ::: Favorites There's no way you can stop as fast using the back wheel, it doesn't even matter how you lock the wheel. There's nothing wrong with a fixed gear bike, but you really ought to have a front brake. In fact, my front brake saved my ass today when someone pulled into the bike lane and stopped on a downhill street. 07-09-30 06:27:19 __________________________________________________

semiotics101 ::: Favorites SPECS: Born and raised in NYC, best friend was a messenger for 9 years, she's 33 now, she rides fixed gear with front calipers, no helmet. REALITY CHECK: She was walking through a cross-walk one day, she had the green, "fixie" rider with no brake came jammin down and couldn't stop, she was blasted. Punk got a broken face and a broken bike, my friend got mangled and now limps the rest of her life. 07-09-28 22:52:14 __________________________________________________
brianpfeifer ::: Favorites evolution? idiot. if anything, that corresponds to survival of the fittest, but that's even a stretch. 07-08-29 01:08:27 __________________________________________________
hairygorillaass ::: Favorites I ride fixed and would never take off the brake--it saves my ass almost daily. skid stopping is an inferior method cuz it requires more preparation since your legs need to be in a certain position and you need to lean forward to take weight off the tire not to mention this inhibits your overall control of the bike. This becomes really dangerous in the city and accidents can happen very quickly. be safe 07-08-26 18:25:17 __________________________________________________
Wulffz ::: Favorites One thing (I don't know if this has been mentioned before), but fixie riders could brake more effitiently with the fixie. The reason cars have ABS (it's called ABS brakes in Denmark. I guess it's the same in USA?) brakes is so i.e. in rainy weather the brakes don't lock up completely, but keeps the wheels running so not to lose tractioncontrol and to have a shorter braking distance. Fixie riders could brake even better if they didn't "locked" their chain completely. Btw. I'm a messenger aswell 07-08-26 07:27:02 __________________________________________________
ronasaur ::: Favorites She threw her weight forward-if ya want to STOP leave your bum on the seat or throw your weight BACK and mash your trailing pedal into the ground-I can go from full spin to stop in about half that distance-broken five frames at the seat tube/bottom bracket lug though as it's pretty bloody brutal! 07-08-08 00:29:19 __________________________________________________
acidtest ::: Favorites I don't think that the point is whether or not one can stop or stop fast. The plaintiff is merely pointing out (and I think rightly so) that the law says she needs to be able to stop and it is clear that she can. It does not distinguish between coaster brakes and cantilever brakes. I would argue that she has been wrongfully convicted. I agree with all of you who use front brakes. I certainly do on my fixie as there is no doubt that you can stop more quickly with one than without. 07-07-24 05:38:35 __________________________________________________ |
