Description: World AIDS Day is on December 1, 2007 and Dame Elizabeth Taylor is schedule to appear in A.R. Gurney's famous theatrical piece, "Love Letters" with actor James Earl Jones for a single performance raising one million dollars for AIDS... research and client services. For a quarter of a century, this pandemic has wrecked havoc with the lives of millions of people around the world. In the beginning, surviving a year was a struggle in itself and then throughout the first decade of the disease, our US government refused to recognize it as being something of a priority and this angered the gay population...the population that was hit hardest with the disease. With Dame Elizabeth Taylor at the helm, activist/ human rights organizations erupted throughout the country...demanding government funding for research, medication, client/patient needs. When this money was not forthcoming, people got angrier and fought for the funding that we have today. But this fight is far from over. The state of AIDS/HIV has gone through several stages over the past twenty five years. After sudden death, it was medication assistance and development that was needed most. This is where the money was needed and this is where funding was lacking. Elizabeth Taylor became the Chair of AmFar, 'The American Foundation of AIDS Research'...raising multi- millions of dollars for scientific work. Her personal 'Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation' actively collects donations that are distributed around the world for direct client services through the major AIDS Services Organizations on every continent of the world. But, this stage of AIDS development is primarily relevant in terms of medication keeping the disease manageable and prolonging life. Most professionals are fearing that the long term side effects of being on these harsh medications will eventually be risking the lives of millions with medical complications that are unrelated to AIDS but more due to medication toxicity. Our bodies are not equipped for decades of harsh medications. So the cure still must be found. It must be first and foremost. AIDS must be eradicated entirely and the focus of a total cure must never stray. In this clip, we see the frustrations activists faced (speech by Vito Russo) in the late 1980's when experimental drugs were not being given to anyone, though were available. We see Dame Elizabeth angry at those discriminating against the disease. We are still in a critical phase of the disease and will be until AIDS is no longer the life threatening menace that it is today. Dame Elizabeth Taylor continues to be the front runner in the realm of AIDS fund raising.
