What do we do? I think the only thing to do is get rid of primitive, ancient, and archaic beliefs, and concentrate on what's more important. All we can do is create a philosophy of life, based on logic and order and laws, and forget about the things we cannot prove, or things that don't even matter to our way of life here on Earth, so that we can create a greater society, devoid of any outside interference of invisible, supernatural beings who don't matter anyways.

I can agree with your overall assessment for the most part. Easier said than done, I think. Isn't that what we're already trying to do? That's the reason religion has gotten so nuts in the first place, as a reaction to secularization. Fundamentalism initially formed as a movement of radicals who wanted to overcome the leaps of science with zealotry.

I think fundamentalism would still be around. I think if anything, the more militant Atheist movement on youtube is a response to that. And it is easier said than done, but it takes time. Atheism's on the rise all around the world. Sweden's about 85% atheist, Britain's 44%, Norway's 72%, Japan's 65%, etc. and the U.S. atheists have doubled and is the fastest growing among the other religions.

So, it'll take time, but I think the smarter we become, the more religion will fade away. I think it's inevitable with time, the non-believers will outnumber the believers, and then it'll just continue to crumble. So, if our species can last, it'll be all good. (if fundies and islamics don't kill all first that is) lol.

The funny thing is, is that before the fundamentalism that we now see came about, Christianity was generally becomming more liberal, and actually embracing secularization & science by conceding that the Bible could not be taken literally. The liberalization of Christianity is another one of the major factors that provoked Fundamentalism.

The ironic part is that if Christianity hadn't reverted to its fanatical medieval form, we probably wouldn't be having the religious debate that we see today. I still think we'd be seeing more atheists emerge, but theists and atheists wouldn't be "enemies" like they are now. Liberal religion embraced rational thought and kept their faith separate, almost heading more toward legitimate philosophy than religion.

I think your statistics regarding atheism in other parts of the world is indicative of the trend we would have seen in the United States of Fundamentalism hadn't made such a prominent emergence. You will see radicals in every movement, in every country, but the United States is unique among the Western nations in that fanaticism has become the "norm."

True that. It's a real damned if they do damned if they don't situation for the fundies. I think deep down they know their religion is dying, and there's nothing they can do because their only answer to the tough questions science and atheists raise is, "god is awesome". That's their whole argument. So, that's why they're forced to resort to such underhanded actions. The desperate measures of a dying religion.

I don't think religion is on its way out. I think it will always be with us, because science can never answer the basic questions that religion answers. Even if science answered all the questions of how the Universe operates, there will still remain the question of WHY it operates that way, and not another. In a sense, I think that spiritual speculation is important and necessary. However, I think fundamentalist religions definitely need to go at some point. Let THEM adapt and evolve.

that's the wrong idea: true christians will never oppose anyone - because we know Jesus. It's a way of life, as Jesus is life. I don't feel any need to fight over what I found to give me life? why? fighting drains that life out of me... i belive religion is indeed on its way out, but you know what religion? religion of Bush and the like, who just use that label for their selfish purposes...
